Maidstone Nepalese Community took part in Maidstone Mela launching event. MNC members gathered at Fremlin Walk shopping centre to co-ordinate the programme. Ms Agnela and Ashmita Chhantyal performed an excellent dance which lured the passer by visitors. There was also performance by the Blogo and 4 x 4 Bhangra group. The event was a part of promoting Maidstone Mela which is becoming bigger and bigger each year.

14th April (1'st of Baisakh 2068BS), more than 200 members of MNC gathered at Aylesford Village Community Hall to celebrate their new year. The community Chairman Mr. Dam Bahadur Gurung welcomed all and conveyed best wishes on behalf of MNC. Furthermore Mr. Gurung thanked the previous executive members for their hard work and selfless contribution to community. He further honoured them by endowing Khaadaa. Youngesters not only performed Nepalese traditonal dances but also hip-hop and modern dance. The event was ended at midnight with the jerk of floor dance!

Nepalese ladies donated £200.00 to Demelza - Hospice for Children Care.Demelza Kent is a hospice providing a large range of hospice and care services to children, young people and their families especially Life-limited or life threatened children or young people and their families benefit from a wide range of facilities.

Ladies from Maidtone Nepalese Community raised the fund by playing 'Deusi/Bhailo' during Deepawali festival.Deusi/ Bhailo generally refer to the act of singing & dancing in a group. It is a tradition in Nepal to go out in groups to neighboring houses and sing a song and perform dance for home owners during the national festival of Tihar (famously known as Deepawali). At the end of the song, the host brings food and money for the group. The group thanks and blesses the host and move on to the next house.

Nepalese ladies in Maidstone found this tradition a good way to raise the funds and also have fun. Maidstone Nepalese Community has been playing a role to help the locals and local or neeeded organisation by raising the funds for them. This is another example of 'giving back to local' has been fulfilled by Nepalese ladies living in Maidstone.

MNC CELEBRATES THE MAIDSTONE MELA 2010

12th Sept, MAIDSTONE NEPALESE COMMUNITY (MNC) proudly took part in annual multi cultural celebration of Maidstone town, MAIDSTONE MELA as ambassdor of Nepal to UK HE Dr. Suresh Chandra Chalise opened the event. Nearly 5000 people turned up to enjoy the event even nature had to spell her grace of a good weather! HE Dr. Chalise was welcomed by MNC Chair Ratna Limbu and Secretary Hari Gurung.

Maidstone town celebrates the multi cultural and tradition fair on 2nd weekend of Sept every year. This event brings everyone to a plateform and helps to share and exchange the cultural values and norms. MNC being the largest ethnic group in the town area, has been taking part in since 2007 and plays a vital role being a member of advisory committee of Mela.

The mela was opened with the community pared which was escorted by the Panche baja (Nepalese traditional music) along with kids from school, and other member of communities. Members of MNC did not wait a minute to dance when the Naumati baajaa was played which then thrilled the surroundings and audiences.

Following the speech by Dr. Chalise, Nepali dances began. The song and performance lured the audiences as usual. Nepalese foods including MO:MO were on sale. Nepalese community's stall was further decorated by the paintings of Mr. Gobinda Sah 'Aajad' an wellknown fine artists who specilises in oil paintings with the theme of 'cloud'!

The mela consisted many stalls by the various communities and business. Public Relation Officer Dinesh Khadka showed HE Dr. Chalise and Mrs. Chalise around the mela which both keenly observed.

MNC LADIES RACED FOR LIFE

Today, a dozen of ladies from MAIDSTONE NEPALESE COMMUNITY took part in 'Race For Life 2010' to help to raise the fund for Cancer Research. All dressed up with personalised grears. They arrived at Mote Park at around 10am and looked very much excited for their participation. Members from MNC were also present at site to assist their prepartion and ofcourse looking after their kits and kids!!

Members from the community had organised refreshment for the participants. Mr. Jhapat Bhujel and Padam Thapa were busy from the morning to set up BBQ whereas Mr. Ratna Limbu, Mr. Hari Gurung, Mr. Jagat Ale and Mr. Dinesh Khadka arrived on site to ensure all technical stuff and supporting are organised for those ladies who took part in the 'race' to raise the fund for good casues.

Furthermore, Mr. Chitra Chand , Mr. Binod Chand, Mr. Rojen Gurung, Mr. Umesh Khadka were also in the even to raise the morale and congratulate their deeds.

Well done to all who participate in such a good charity work!!

Rt Hon Ann Widdcombe meets members from Nepalese Community

Rt. Hon Ann Widdcombe met with members of MNC. Chair of the community thanked to Ms. Widdcombe for her immense support and pioneer campaign for Gurkha justice. He further stressed that her support and help to Gurkha community will be remembered for generation to come. Mr Ratna Limbu; the chair of the community also presented a flower bouquet as a 'big thanks'. In the event Nina Gurung; the vice chair of Women's committee presented Nepalese pashmina shawl as a token of 'thanks'.

Mrs Gurung appreciated Ms Widdcombe's effort to make to meet Nepalese community members. Furthermore she also stated that Ann was the pioneer to raise the voice for the Gurkha right.

Other memebers (Mr. Dinesh Khadka, Mr. Hari Gurung, Mr. Agni Thapa) presented there thanked Ms. Widdcombe.

Conservative PP MP Helen Grant, cabinet members for cultur Cll. Brian Moss, Simon Grant were also presented in the event. Helen Grant ensured that she will play a vital role to promote the youth's potentiality and work closely with MNC in order to ensure the community is well looked after. The community expressed its best wishes to Mrs. Grant.

MNC celebrates Nepalese new year

10th April, hundreds of Nepalese living in Maidstone area gathered in Aylesford community hall to celebrate their new year.

Nepal has been using Bikram Sambat calendar for decades. This calendar was established by the Indian emperor Vikramaditya after conquering Sakas in 50BC. The Bikram Sambat calendar is 56.7 years ahead of Georgian calendar.

Chair of the community welcomed all and expressed best wish to all on behalf of MNC. Such even not only implies celebration but also helps to bring everyone together and enhances the community relationship.

Equality & Diversity Seminar

12th March, Kent Fire and Rescue Service organised a seminar 'Equality & Diversity'. Nearly 2 dozens of fire officers from different parts of Kent took part in the event. Mr. AM Adam opens the event and highlight the importance of working closely with the community. Phil Bendall described about the risk of fire and safey faced by seasonal migrant workers. Dinesh Khadka; PR of Maidstone Nepalese Community highlighted about MNC and explained the opportunities and difficulties of the community. Furthermore Mr. Khadka pointed the importance of building the relation with local authorities such as Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Alisa Paton gave a comprehensive information about domestic violence and methodology of its analysis and way of prevention and reporting. Chris Caswell touched on the subject of National Disability Fire Association and Dyslexia awareness. Furthermore Carol Wiles talked aobut Deaf Awareness programme.
The seminar did sum-up the importance of community involvment with the fire authorities.
MNC felt this nature of seminar does play an essential role bridge the relation with the local authorities for the future mutual benefits.
MNC thanked Graham Day who played a significant role to organise the event and expressed MNC look forward to working the KFRS in the future.

MNC meets Maidstone Grammar School for Girls

6th Feb, members from Maidstone Nepalese Community met staff of Maidstone Grammar School for Girls. They carried out PP presentation about Nepal, Nepalese culture, geography, history of Gurkhas and education sytem in Nepal. As nearly 12 staff from MGSG are planning to visit to Nepal, MNC was requested to give a brief information which could be relevant during their trip to Nepal.

Ratna Limbu highlighted on geogrpahy and history of Nepal whereas Hari Gurung touched on history of Gurkha soldier. Nina Gurung described about Nepalese culutures and Dinesh Khadka gave a brief information about Nepalese education system.

Mr. Andy Browne (Resources Director) thanked to the members as this presentation has helped them to understand the basic information about Nepal.

During the meet, MGSG offered a delicious lunch and home made cakes and snacks.

MNC expressed its thanks and emphasised that this is the beginning of building the relation with MGSG and willing to work together in the future for mutual benefits.

Chair-person offered Mr Browne to provide the feedback from his trip and he agreed to meet MNC after his trip.

4th Dec, Maidstone Cultural Group lauched its first ever produced Calendar for 2010 which comprises photographic collection depicting various cultural and traditional aspects. CM Morel D'suza welcomed the guests and highlighted the work carried out by MCG. Mayor of Maidstone Clr. thanked the team who worked hard to make the event success. MNC takes part in MCG event representing Nepalese and Gurkha cultural values. Members of MNC performed Nepalese traditional dances which was highly appreciated by the viewers.

Maidstone Mela 09 was hugely celebrated. Thousands of people from Maidstone turned to take part in. Mela is being celebrated on 2nd week of Sept each year to mark the diversity of Maidstone town.

People from different backgroud performed their culture, tradition, foods and musics. Maidstone Nepalese Community also had a stall for foods and information about Nepal, Nepalese culture and natural beauties!

Priya Maden performed Nepalese traditional dance and there was also Sakela dance. Maidstone locals qued to taste Nepalese dumplings (MO:MO) with tomato chutney.

Mayor of Maidstone Cll. Peter Pravin and Cllr. Daphen Pravin visited MNC's stall and enjoyed chow-min complimented with chuntey. Former Maidstone Mayor Cllr Denise Joy and Kenny Joy expressed how they enjoyed the event.

Members of MNC eagerly took part in and appreciated how the Mela is getting bigger and raising its profile.

MNC exppresses that such event plays a catalyst to integrate between different culture, background, race and origin.

MNC has been taking part in Mela since 2007.

Day of dancing and food started build up to Mela

Large crowds watched Nepalese dancing while sampling the cuisine of the Himalayan country. The entertainment put on by Maidstone’s Nepalese community filled the bandstand area of Fremlin Walk on Saturday.
Dancer Priya Limbu, 16, delighted the crowds with her traditional routines and there was also a high-kicking tae kwon do demonstration.
The event was part of the run-up to the annual Maidstone Mela on September 12 and 13 in Mote Park, which celebrates diversity through music, food and dance from across the world.

29th Aug, hundred of people gathered to experience Nepalese culture and foods. In conjuction with Fremlin Walk Shopping Centre, Maidstone Nepalese Community group conducted the show with traditional dances, foods, displaying Nepalese handy crafts and Tae-Kwan do performnce.
Visitor very keenly obversevered the programme and eargerly tasted Nepalese food called Mo:MO with tomato chutney and spiced potato.
Nearly 20s of kids performed dances and Tae- Kwan do kata.

Shoppers can experience and celebrate Nepalese culture at a shopping precinct in Maidstone this weekend.

Members of Maidstone’s Nepalese Community Group (MNC) will be at Fremlin Walk tomorrow (Saturday) to show onlookers traditional aspects of their lifestyles and history.

People will be able to try Mo Mo – popular dumplings in Nepal, enjoy folk dancing session and join younger members of the group in tae-kwan do demonstrations.

There will also be exhibits to highlight daily life in Nepal and the proud role of the country’s Gurkha regiments in the British Army.

The group will be in the centre between 11am and 3pm.

The event is part of the run-up to the annual Maidstone Mela on September 12 and 13 in Mote Park, which celebrates diversity through music, food and dance from across the world.

Centre manager Lloyd Wright said: “Fremlin Walk has close ties with the Nepalese community and we are very pleased to be hosting this event with them.

“It’s sure to be an enjoyable, family event and a colourful part of the Maidstone Mela programme.”

Lumley joins fight against Nepali people trafficking

On Ms Lumley’s last day of her week-long trip, which encompassed visits to villages and towns across the country to meet Gurkha vetreans and their families, she was invited to the charity’s base in Kathmandu; a refuge and orphanage hidden away off a side street.
Run by Anuradha Koirala, a senior figure in Nepali society and known to everyone as Aunty, the charity not only cares for victims of trafficking but also actively combats it, raiding brothels across India and targeting known traffickers.

Aunty told the Kentish Express: “Every day we get nine or ten calls. We don’t go to the police. Instead we chase down the traffickers and we hand them over. There is no point in ringing Asian police if a woman goes missing, they will just say 'oh, she’s with her husband...
“The first thing the traffickers do is seperate mothers and children so the child doesn’t give trouble when their mum is with clients. We just recently saved four women from Pune [Indian city pronounced 'Poona’] and on the way back as normal people would turn up and say 'this is my daughter’ etc. It is a three-day train journey from Mumbai and we have to have police travelling with us all the way.

“But we now have 450 cases in the courts and recently 35 have been convicted, in some cases for 90 years.”Among the many childern at the refuge, many of those pictured are HIV positive. They were either born that way as a result of their mothers’ abuse in brothels, or contracted after being trafficked themselves.
Speaking to the assembled women, girls and boys at the refuge, Ms Lumley said: “When I got here today, Aunty asked me if I could be an ambassador for Maiti Nepal, and I’m pleased to say that I have no hesitation in saying yes, absolutely. You have all been so warm and welcoming to us.”
For Ms Lumley and her band of campaigners, now comes the hard work of raising the charity’s profile in the UK and finding ways to help.As Aunty said: “There is no point in people sending things like clothes, as we then have to bribe the post office to let us have them. For Ms Lumley and her band of campaigners, now comes the hard work of raising the charity’s profile in the UK and finding ways to help.As Aunty said: “There is no point in people sending things like clothes, as we then have to bribe the post office to let us have them. members from Maidstone Nepalese Community met to crew manager Mr. Daniel Turnder to discuss community safety and fire safety awareness. This meet has bridged a strong relationship between MNC and Kent Fire Authority. During the meet , it was agreed that Mr. Turner will brief to MNC members regarding Fire Safey and Awareness on 26th July at Aylesford Village Community Hall where MNC will be celebrating Summer BBQ

Ratna Limbu, Hari Gurung, Padam Thapa, Jhapat Bhujel and Dinesh Khadka were also showed around the fire appliances and brifed about their application during fire fighting.

Mr. Turner confirmed that he will organise one Fire Engine to be on site on 26th.

MNC received an especial invitation by the Mayor of Maidstone to visit the town hall. Nearly a dozen of Nepalese members visited the hall and parlor of mayor on 12th May just a week before mayor cllr. Finishes her annual appointment. During the visit, the civic officer highlighted the history of the building. MNC chair presented a Khukuri as a sign of friendship and addressed on behalf of MNC. He stated that Nepalese community has built a robust and strong tie with the borough council and anticipating of its growth in coming days. Beverage drinks were kindly provided and visit was farewell by the informal and personal chat.

The Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Allan Willet kindly invited Maidstone Nepalese Community to his Civic Service at Rochester. Nepalese community is one of the significant group within ethnics living in Kent. Six members of Maidstone Nepalese Community took part in the Service on 26th March. MNC overwhelmed by the invitition as felt inclusion and represetation of the county !

MNC members; Ratna Limbu, Hari Gurung, Jhapat Bhujel, Mina Bhujel, Dilip Rai and Dinesh Khadka enjoyed the event entirely. They have a informal discussion with the Mayor of Maidstone other guests from around the Kent.

While walking on the street, MNC's members were highly regarded by the member of public as the 'Gurkha' hat recalled their nostalgia!

Maidstone Nepalese Community was awarded £2031.05 as a Grassroots Grants by Kent Community Foundation. The amount will be spent towards the cost of annual office rent, computer, printer, desk, chairs and stationery materials.
By establishing MNC's office within Community Support Centre, it will help to work together with other charity organisations and local bodies as this will expose MNC's profile. MNC will further benefit from the grant by;

- Linkage with other local bodies in order to integrate with
locals develop/exchange cultural values
- Building Nepalese Community’s profile with borough council/local
bodies/organization in order gain/achieve youth promoting programme and
work towards youth development
- Linkage with other bodies, it will help in taking part in
social /cultural events.
- Welfare of Nepalese community in terms of social integration and other help
in education, health,transporation, language barrier and so on

Maidstone Museum carried out project naming ''Their Past Your Future'' funded by National Lottery, was lauched tonight. The war veterans took part in the project revealing their past experiences at war both bitter and memorable! Madan Gurung and Badri Rai representing Gurkhas veteran volunteered to record their voice and telling the young interviewers about their war experiences.

Mayor of Maidstone was also present there. Representing MNC Mr. Ranta Limbu, Mr. Hari Gurung, Mr/Mrs. Jhapat Bhujel, Mr/Mrs. Badri Rai, Mr/Mrs. Madan Gurung & Mr./Mrs. Dinesh Khadka attended the launching programme.

PR Officer, Mr. Dinesh Khadka highlighted on MNC's background, policies, future plan and challenges/opportunities. Mr. Khadka also stated that MNC would highly anticipate Mrs. Grant's support and advice in coming days, her expertise in dealing with family affairs, domestic violence, community and so on can be expected by the MNC. Ladies and youths are integral part of the community so the members of Nepalese Ladies and Nepalese Youth Group are also requested to attend this meeting. GOOD TIMES: Nepalese festival has plenty to celebrate

MORE than 500 Nepalese people celebrated a traditional festival at the weekend.
Maidstone Nepalese Community hosted the festival of Dashain, 2065, at Maidstone Leisure Centre, Mote Park, on Friday night.
The festival celebrates the triumph of good against evil and the event at Mote Hall included displays by dancers like the group above.
The community's new logo was also revealed. It shows a pigeon, the symbol of Nepal, next to the Kent Invicta horse, Mount Everest and the Medway.
Dinesh Khadka, spokesman for the community, said: "This comes at the end of an amazing week, where retired Gurkhas won their court action and a Gurkha statue was unveiled.
"We counted 565 people through the doors tonight, which is amazing."

Nepal Day at West Borough Primary School was celebrated on Wednesday 15 October 2008. This is to let all students and teachers of the school know about Nepal and Nepalese including music, dance and costume. Mrs Manju Rai, Sunita Limbu and other Nepalese ladies from local area were elaborately dressed up in traditional Nepalese dress to show the different types of costumes available for the Nepalese ladies. The program included the exhibition of items used in everyday life such as 'Doko', 'Nanglo', 'Mana', 'Pathi', 'Mandal' and of course Nepalese dish.

Councillors Jenni Paterson, Daphne Parvin, Shena William and Agela met with MNC Chair Mr. Ratna Limbu and PR Dinesh Khadka on 29th Sept. This is as per Borough Council's future plan to interact with various community groups to enhance social integration. During the meeting, the cause, barrier and impact of social integration by Nepalese Community were discussed.
MBC is endeavouring to identify wheather MBC is working adequately for minority group of people's inclusion.

Points highlighted:-

Organising events where people from different backgroud participate, this can aid to strengthen social inclusion, integration and development of their cultural norms.
Learning and developing English language would boost day to day activities and benefit in different sectors.

Gurkha Statue Unveiling- 2nd Oct - 12 PM

A big birthday gift; forever lasting honour !!

On the occasion of 60th birthday of Queen's Gurkha Engineer (QGE), Maidstone Borough Council initiated to erect Gurkha Statue by the museum. This not only reflects the QGE' 60th birthday symbol but also depicts the honor to those Gurkha soldiers who have been fighting for Britain for nearly 200 years. The fearless soldiers who are renowned in the world for their bravery, loyality and selflessness will boast to accept the honor.

The statue unveiling ceremony is going to be held on 2nd Oct at 11.30. The programme as follows:-

Queen's Gurkha Engineer soldiers and officers, led by the Brigade of Gurkhas Band Pipes and Drums, will step off from County Hall at approx. 11:35 to march along Week Street to St Faith's Street

When reaching Maidstone Museum in St Faith's Street, the troops (who will arrive at about 11:40) will form into ranks and be inspected by the Mayor and Lt Gen David Bill CB

The unveiling ceremony will start at 12:00 and last approximately 25 minutes

Please do participate the ceremony in a traditional Nepalese costume or formal dress!

Cll. Denise Joy, Mayor of Maidstone has expressed her gratitude toward our 'Charity Eve' which was held on 11th July totally for raising the fund toward the cost of Gurkha statue.
The letter follows:-

NEPALESE CULTURAL EVENING

I am writing to thank you for inviting my Escort and me to attend the Nepalese Cultural Evening. It was a truly wonderful and highly successful event aimed at raising money for a very worthy cause. The food was fantastic.
We particularly enjoyed all of the dancing, the children were enchanting, and I was particularly impressed with those involving the Kukri.

£2000.00 of Charity Fund was handed

Today at 4.30pm, a cheque worth £2000.00 which was raised toward the cost of Gurkha statue was handed to Cll. Dan Daley and Chairman of the Gurkha Tribute Fund Mr. Boorman. Chair of our community Mr. Ratna Limbu, Mr. Saroj Rupacha, Mr. Badri Rai, Mr. Hari Gurung, Mr. Jhapat Bhujel, Mrs. Mina Bhujel and Mr. Dinesh Khadka were present.

Maidstone Nepalese Community would take this opportunity to thank to all those who kindly helped towards raising such a significant amount.

Maidstone Mela 2008- a huge success !!

On 14th Sept, all ethnic groups, different charity organisatons, local trade companies, law enforcement bodies came together to celebrate an annual event of 'Maidstone Mela'. Approximately 14 thousand people visited the event. Maidstone Nepalese Community also took part in the event. There was a general Info desk and food stall. MO:MO, tomato chutney & soft drink were on the stall.

On 16th Sept. at 4.30 PM, Maidstone Nepalese Communty has organised to hand over £2000.00 amout which was raised during Charity Eve and other events. MNC would like to ask all members to be there to raise & caste MNC's high profile. Cllr. Dan Daley & Mr. Boorman will accept our fund and also local tabloids will present there.

Meeting- Summer mela and Dashera

Dear all Members,
As you all know that two important events Summer Mela and Dashera party are right on the corner. I initially thought to have a meeting right after the Gurkha Tribute fund cheque handover but this has been postponed for a week. So it has been decided to held a short meeting to talk and make dicision on 'who', 'how' and 'what' of those events. All members are requested to spread this message and attend the meeting.
Time and date: 1800 hours on Sunday the 31st of August 2008
Place: MCSC Marsham street
Sorry for the short notice but once again I would like to request all the members to attend the meeting so that any misunderstandings which, may occure after the events can be eliminated.

Maidstone Mela 2008

MAIDSTONE MELA 2008

'Mela' implies local gathering in Asian part of the world. Mela is a colourful gathering for social and local event. Maidstone Mela was initiated by Cll. Morel D' soza in 2003 when he was mayor of Maidstone. Maidstone Mela is held every September, this festive fusion of food, music and dance celebrates the rich mix of cultures that exist in and around the county town.

Maidstone Nepalese Community (MNC) has heavily involved to participate in the event since 2007. Like last year this year as well MNC will have a stall displaying Nepalese cultural and natural attraction posters, leaflet etc. There will be some Nepalese traditional dances. MNC is working very hard to sell Nepalese foods in the event which was heavily requested last year by the visitors.

There will be FREE entry to the event, please do come and visit our stall and be part of the event.

Do not forget, it is 14th Sept on Saturday !!
